Project Description

Legionella Water Test

Legionella Water Test, as a duty holder or nominated person responsible for the management of a water system you have a legal responsibility to manage and assess the risks associated with Legionella. A key component of your sites scheme of control, could be to regularly carry our legionella water tests and monitor the bacteria counts within the water system that you are responsible for.

Regular Legionella Water Tests are required when your legionella risk assessment and scheme of control identifies the risk and frequency of legionella water testing. Our team will take a sample of water from the specified water outlets such as showers, taps, water tanks and take them to an approved lab where the water will be sampled for legionella bacteria.

How Often Should You Test For Legionella?

Depending on the risks associated with your water systems the risks will influence how often you should test for legionella bacteria. As an example and in accordance with HSG274 Legionnaires disease technical guidance spa pools should be sampled at least quarterly, however there may be cases where more frequent legionella water testing is carried out – for example if previous test results show higher than normal counts. Sherpa can advise you on whether your facility whether it is a care home, school or hospital or other premises with water systems needs testing.

Legionella Bacteria Testing In Water

Where legionella water testing is considered appropriate, the water sampling method should be carried out in accordance with BS7592 and the biocide, if used, neutralised where possible. Water samples are tested by a UKAS-accredited laboratory that takes part in a water microbiology proficiency testing scheme. Test results are returned to the customer after the water samples have been cultured and any micro-organisms isolated and identified into the correct sero-groups. Depending on the legionella bacteria counts, Sherpa will advise on what is required and whether further legionella water tests need carrying out.

  • Carry out legionella water tests where appropriate

  • Legionella testing in water storage tanks

  • Check water temperatures fall inline with the scheme of control

  • Check for legionella bacteria in shower outlets

  • Test for legionella in tap outlets including T.M.V’s
