Project Description
Water Tank Disinfection
We carry out water tank disinfection to all size’s of tanks to a very high standard, water tanks need regular maintenance and are inspected on a 6 monthly basis to keep them safe. Water sampling can be done periodically to safeguard these systems.
WATER TANK DISINFECTION SERVICE INFORMATION
Regular Water Tank Disinfection helps reduce and prevent biofilm buildup thus reducing bacteria counts and the risk of legionnaires diseases.
Sherpa can also install new water tanks where required.

Legionella In Water Storage Tanks
Every year unsuspecting people inhale water droplets containing deadly bacteria and contract Legionnaires diseases. Water tanks can be a source of biofilm where legionella bacteria can breed if not properly maintained thus contaminating down services such as taps, toilets and showers. For this reason, cold water storage tanks should form part of the sites legionella risk assessment and legionella control policy where regular water tank disinfection is carried out.
Do You Need Water Tank Disinfection?
ACOP L8 is the Health and Safety Executive document that gives recommendations for the control of Legionnaire’s Disease in water systems. It recommends that water tanks are inspected annually and if found to be dirty should be cleaned and then disinfected.
The following solution covers the procedure for disinfecting header tanks and if required, the down services. Whether disinfection is required on the down services, this will depend on the clients wishes and whether it is practical. If for example the down services are in a hotel which is in constant use then it will not be possible to disinfect unless the hotels water outlets have been shut down for maintenance. The standard typically requires a concentration of 50 ppm Chlorine in constant contact for at least 1 hour or 20 ppm of chlorine for at least 2 hours.
Isolate cold water tank
Drain water tank and clean using chemicals
Disinfect water tank using chemicals
Disinfect lid and pipework if needed

Water samples are taken to an UKAS accredited laboratory for bacteria testing including legionella, TVC, E. coli
